My favourite beauty discoveries for 2018

Another year has come and gone! 2018 was a great year filled with new discoveries. From skincare to makeup, I have rounded up my favourites from this fantastic year.

I didn't realise I had actually tried a lot of new skincare products this year until I started curating this list. I'm incredibly grateful for this year that has passed and for all the generous brands that have sent me their products to try because I believe a large proponent of my favourite discoveries have come from them. Although a few of these products were initially sent for free all of them will be definite repurchases for me.

First, we have Drunk Elephant's Protini, C-Tango and D-Bronzi. I'm sure you all know how much I love Drunk Elephant and it's no surprise that their products have made it into this list. Protini is a polypeptide cream that is abundant with proteins and nutrients to help with your skin's texture and appearance. I love how beautiful the texture it, it is light but still moisturising and incredibly nourishing which makes it perfect all year round. This product is not available in Australia but if you can manage to get your hands on it I highly recommend that you do. C-Tango is Drunk Elephant's vitamin C eye cream, packed with 5 forms of vitamin C and 8 peptides. At the beginning of this year, I really wanted to find an eye cream that would help with my dark circles and fine lines. Although there is only so much an eye cream could do towards dark circles I strongly believe that this cream definitely helped. The texture is also incredible, it sinks into your skin beautifully and sits so well under makeup. D-Bronzi was one of Drunk Elephant's new releases this year, it's an anti-pollution sunshine serum. I was so ecstatic that they sent it to me to try, especially because it didn't come to Australia until much later. It was my perfect companion on my European summer holiday, adding a beautiful bronze to my complexion whilst protecting my skin from pollution and environmental stressors.

Go To Skincare was a brand that I had started using this year and I was honestly surprised I had not tried it earlier. The brand is super witty and funny and their products are REALLY good. I am not a fan of facial oils but their Face Hero is incredible because it just sinks into your skin, nourishing it and not leaving it feeling heavy or oily. Their Very Useful Face Cream was a saviour for my skin this year, especially through winter, when my skin was irritated, sensitive and dry.

I bought my first bottle of Caudalie's Beauty Elixir when I saw it in a pharmacy in Paris, I had only seen the brand around here and there but was never really interested in it. I'm SO glad I purchased it because it's probably one of my favourite discoveries, the mist is so fine and refreshing I am addicted to spraying it on my face whenever I get the chance. I now have 3 bottles, one in the office, one in my travel pouch and another at home.

I'm normally dedicated to my C-Firma but Paula's Choice c15 Super Booster is a hot contender for my favourite vitamin C. They're very similar in the vitamin E/ vitamin E/ Ferulic Acid ingredients and the results are just as good. My skin is instantly brighter whenever I use the serum. The only issue is that the shelf life is 3 months and the packaging just makes the serum little bit more prone to oxidation compared to C-Firma.

In terms of moisturisers this year, I have fallen in love with uber hydrating, lightweight and effective moisturisers like Sunday Riley's Tidal and Tatcha's Water Cream. Water Cream has the silkiest texture and applies beautifully on the skin, giving it refreshing hydration. I can't describe in words how soft and smooth it makes your skin, it just wears so well under makeup or on it's own. Tidal similarly is lightweight and very hydrating, I feel like it's the perfect summer moisturiser that plumps and brightens the skin. Its mild cucumber-y scent is also really yummy.

This year, in makeup, I upped my ante with highlighters or any glow-inducing product. I'm a huge fan of the glass skin/ healthy glow trend, inspired by makeup artists like Nam Vo and Emma Chen, and that is reflected in my favourite products for 2018.
Hourglass has been a long time favourite brand of mine and a few of their new releases have been my absolute favourites. Their Veil Translucent Setting Powder is a finely milled powder infused with light reflective particles. It sits on the skin so well that you can barely tell there's anything there, the light reflective particles blurs your complexion and gives it that airbrushed look. Their Ambient Edit Unlocked features 6 completely new shades, each more beautiful than the last. I love how versatile this palette is and how radiant it makes your skin look. Definitely, one of my favourite products from this year is their Caution Mascara, it's one of those rare mascara's that adds bot only length and volume but also defined lashes. I have genetically short and flat Asian lashes and this mascara just does SUCH a good job as holding a curl and opening my eyes up. I think a lot of people have issues with it clumping but I feel like their putting on multiple coats? I feel like, for me, one coat is enough to achieve the desired results.

I have loved using Mecca Max's Liquid Light in multiple ways this year. It's a high-impact and very pigmented, metallic highlighter that only costs $25. I have loved using it mixed in with foundation and underneath my foundation, giving my complexion that 'lit from within' glow.

Maybelline's Age Rewind Concealer, this isn't a new discovery per se as I have used this many times in the past, it's more like a rediscovery. I have forgotten how much I love using this concealer it provides enough coverage for the under eye area without being cakey at all. It's also incredibly affordable which I also love.

MAC's Lip Pencil in Boldly Bare and Lip Lustre Lipstick in Patisserie. I was kindly invited by Mac to discover my new favourite lip shades, and discover them I did. I have been loving corals and nudes this year and Boldly Bare is the perfect mix of both, I could wear this colour on its own all day, every day. Patisserie is also a beautiful, sheer lipstick that is great for a casual, everyday look but it has some fine gold particles to give your look that slightly extra oomph.

Charlotte Tilbury's Matte Revolution Lipsticks in Amazing Grace and Pillow Talk are my two other favourite lip product discoveries this year. Pillow Talk is like THE perfect nude, it's honestly like the 'your lips, but better' nude, the formula is also creamy with a matte finish but still hydrating on the lips. I had initially wanted to purchase the shade 'Hot Sienna' (their coral shade) but the sales lady at Selfridges accidentally gave me Amazing Grace, which I didn't realise until I got back to my hotel in London. I'm not complaining though, because this shade is a stunning pink-coral lipstick that is genuinely so feminine and beautiful.

I've only started getting into liquid blushes this year and Glossier's Cloud Paint in Beam is, not only the easiest product to use but the prettiest shade of pink. It's super buildable so you can go from the slightest flush to full-on pink cheeks. I love how natural it looks on the skin and how suitable it is for my '5 minutes in the morning to get ready' routine.

My favourite highlighters this year have been Kiko Milano's Water Eyeshadow in Champagne, even though it is an eyeshadow I prefer using it as a highlighter because I feel like this silvery champagne shade is more suited for it. It's super affordable and pigmented, I like wetting my brush with setting spray and then applying it for an incredibly metallic, foiled look. As well as the huge O!Mega Foil Highlighting compact by Marc Jacobs Beauty, this was a purchase later on in the year but I instantly love it because the gold is dramatic and multi-faceted, it gives your complexion the MOST amazing glow.

I made it a resolution at the beginning of the year to focus on my hair and body because I often neglect them and hence discovered a huge array of new favourites in these categories.

First off, my ultimate favourite new body product is Sol De Janiero's Bum Bum Cream. It smells amazing, leaves your skin feeling incredibly soft and contains illuminating particles to give your skin a subtle healthy glow and accentuate your tan.

I've always been a fan of Frank Body's coffee scrubs but fell more in love with it when I discovered their Express-o Coffee Scrub which comes 'whipped for your convenience' which makes the whole process faster and a whole lot less messy. It also smells so good you can almost eat it.

I've feel like I had been introduced to the world of fake tanning this year. Starting with Tan Luxe's 'The Body' Glow Drops, they're easy to use and customisable tanning drops that you can mix with any body lotion or cream. Their Instant Hero is also this beautiful illuminating body bronzer that adds a lovely warm glow to your body, making it perfect for the summer/party season.
The Isle of Paradise Self-Tanning Mousse was a new tanning product I tried towards the end of this year. The mousse spreads easily with no streaks and the colour is a deep, natural looking tanned.

In haircare, I discovered Amika's Pink Charcoal Scalp Cleansing Oil and their Reset Exfoliating Jelly Shampoo (not pictured) these two products are great to use once per week to literally reset your scalps from product build up and oiliness. My hair always looks and feels so healthy whenever I use them. I also found a new favourite drugstore haircare brand in Kristin Ess, all of her products are less than $25 at Priceline and they all smell incredible and are very high quality products. My favourite has been the Reconstructive Moisture Mask because it always leaves my dry, colour damaged hair feeling so soft.

How has your 2018 been in the world of beauty? And what have been your favourite products discoveries?

*Please note that some of these products have been gifted to me throughout the year but all opinions are my own. Please also note that no links are affiliated.

  1. OMG I just used my Glossier Cloud Paint this week for the first time - IN LOVE! I ordered it in two colours, love both. A pain to get delivered to Australia but glad I did :)

  2. So many amazing products! Hourglass really killed it with their releases this year. You have made me desperately want to get more Drunk Elephant in my life now haha xx
